SUMMARY:Primary Subject Leaders - Assessment and Progression (Virtual Session)
DESCRIPTION:Evidence shows that effective Assessment for Learning (AfL) leads to raised attainment. Now that formal recording of levels has been removed\, you need to be secure in your understanding of how to make judgements about children’s achievements and progress. Throughout the course we will identify how you can integrate and embed assessment practices into your science teaching. By working through this selection of modules you will be able to use a range of AfL strategies effectively to promote children’s learning and will acquire a deeper understanding of progression. These modules are designed to help you to make confident and reliable teacher assessment of learning in science and identify children’s next steps. \n\nModule 1: Assessment in the new national curriculum \n\nModule 2: Developing teacher assessment\n\n\nModule 3: Securing understanding\n\n\n\nStarts 26th February 2021\n\nMore information and to book online

SUMMARY:Cross-curricular opportunities in primary science
DESCRIPTION:Explore practical ways of stimulating creativity\, reinforcing understanding and forming real-world connections between subjects. \nSession 1 – Linking science and ICT\nJulia Briggs (eLIM School Development Advisor) will explore how technology can help learners to observe\, look for patterns and to identify\, group and classify animals and plants. Technology can also be used to support comparative and fair testing and increase opportunities for research. Bring a tablet or laptop to consider a variety of resources that will develop curiosity and excitement\, and help learners to increase the power of the explanations they give for natural phenomena. \nSession 2 – Linking science with history\nDr Alison Trew (Area Mentor\, Primary Science Teaching Trust) is co-author of ‘Standing On the Shoulders of Giants’\, a resource that introduces a framework for learning about famous historical scientists\, which emphasizes their work rather than facts about their lives. She will show how practical enquiries that model those carried out by the scientist help to develop an understanding of how their work was carried out and how scientific ideas have changed over time. She will also share another PSTT resource\, ‘Engineering our World’\, which introduces eight famous scientists and engineers through group-based engineering challenges. \nSession 3 – Linking science with geography\nEd Walsh\, (author\, curriculum developer\, CPD provider\, STEM Learning) will demonstrate the real potential for linking these subjects and improving the quality of T&L in doing so. Not only is there scope to use shared concepts such as the water cycle and geological processes but there are organisations producing high quality ready-to-use curriculum materials. Try out activities from Practical Action and the National Farmers Union and consider how they can be used to engage pupils and provide teachers with effective resources. Furthermore\, developing this link also provides a valuable way into aspects of the curriculum such as citizenship\, global awareness and sustainability. \n£85 per person\, with a 20% discount for bookings made by 14 February \nBook online at http://www.stem.org.uk/rp198 \nDownload flyer

SUMMARY:Leading assessment\, moderation and tracking in primary science - Day Two
DESCRIPTION:This course is ideal for teachers who want to gain a greater understanding of the current expectations around assessment and children’s progress in science. \nIt can be taken as a two-day course\, or day 1 as a standalone day. \nDay 1: Where are we now? A national update on the current picture of assessment. A look at in-school formative assessment and what this looks like in terms of science. A consideration of how TAPS can support a formative assessment approach culminating in summative judgements being made. \nDay 2: an in-depth focus on in-school summative assessment and how the PLAN materials can support making summative judgements. How the teacher assessment frameworks needs to be a whole school issue and how to moderate work to ensure the reliability of judgments. A look at nationally standardised summative assessments and how these can be used formatively in the classroom. \nA two-day course: 13 February & 2 March 2020. \nSubject Leader & Assessment Flyer \nCost: £190.00 \nBook now at www.stem.org.uk/rp198
